First though; a little Beard-101-Class.
At the root of every one of your beard follicles, (individual hairs) you have a pair of glands called sebaceous glands.
These glands are key to making sure that your beard stays well nourished.
The sebaceous glands create this oil called sebum oil.
Did you know?
Sebum oil can’t keep up with the growth of your beard follicle?
This is when your beard and skin become itchy, dry, and flakey. Not exactly an attractive look.
Beardruff is dandruff for your beard. You continue to itch because it’s driving you crazy, but then you start to scratch off flakes (beardruff) onto your shirt, the tablecloth at the fine-dining restaurant you and your date are at, or the paperwork on the desk at your job-interview.
Beardruff is just NOT cool!
This CBD Beard Oil Recipe has a ton of great options, and it’ll take you less than 5 minutes to create it and use it. We suggest using it at least every other day for very-flakey-faces – and then gradually decrease the use when you notice your beardruff begins to diminish.
CBD Beard Balm: A DIY Recipe + Video
Father’s Day is this weekend! What are you doing for your pops? Maybe a backyard BBQ or a patio lunch (depending on where you are and whether restrictions have been lifted)?
Maybe a beer bouquet or a new tie?
I’m going with CBD beard balm for the dog dad in our house. He’s got a whopper of a beard, and it needs a little TLC.
I could buy it, sure, but with a quick trip to Amazon (and my kitchen cupboards) I found everything I need to make it. It’s cheaper, and I know exactly what’s in it (and can choose my partner-in-crime’s favorite scent).
But, since Julio is such a wiz in the kitchen (and on camera), I dropped all the ingredients off to him so he could make it (and you could watch him do it).
Balm Benefits & Basics
If the man in your life sports a beard (yes, even a moustache counts), there are lots of reasons for him to use CBD beard balm. It:
- Reduces that irritating itch
- Helps deal with dandruff (AKA beardruff)
- Protects against the elements that can damage beard hair fibers (humidity, cold, excessive sun exposure)
- Helps tame the beast!
- Keeps the beard (and skin) healthy and moisturized
In any good beard balm, you’ve got 4 essential elements:
- A type of butter
- A carrier oil
- An essential oil
Beeswax gives you some slight hold for styling, but it also locks in moisture to keep the beard healthy and protected.
The butter (shea butter, cocoa butter) provides a moisturizing element and improve the spreadability of the balm itself.
The carrier oil (argan oil, jojoba oil) makes your beard soft and healthy looking and
The essential oil (whatever you want) gives the beard balm a nice smell, and imparts whatever benefits the specific oil you choose has.
Of course, our CBD beard balm has a 5th essential element: CBD oil. So you get the benefits of all those ingredients listed above PLUS all the benefits of CBD oil! BONUS!!
How to Make CBD Beard Balm
Making CBD beard balm is super easy. You just need a few ingredients, a double boiler (and yes, a pot in a pot will do the trick), some measuring utensils and some heat.
Here’s how to make it:
- 2 Tbsp Beeswax
- 2 Tbsp Coconut oil
- 1 Tbsp Shea butter
- 1 Tbsp Argan Oil
- 10-15 drops CBD oil
- 10-15 drops essential oil (we used eucalyptus)
Other stuff you’ll need:
- glass measuring cup
- grater (if you’re not using beeswax pellets)
- metal tin or small mason jar (for storage)
Gather your ingredients. If you have a solid block of beeswax, grate it so you have 2 tablespoons.
Using a double boiler, place the beeswax into the melting container, add the coconut oil and shea butter. Place the container either over or directly in the water on low heat and wait for it to gently melt, string constantly.
Once it’s completely melted (no solids remain), carefully remove it from the heat. Quickly add in the argan oil and the essential oils (if you’re using them), stir. Finally, at the last minute (after it’s cooled down without solidifying), add the CBD and stir again to mix it in really well.
Immediately pour the mixture into your chosen container. You can use anything with a tight fitting lid (even a small mason jar would work). Let your balm set, cool, and solidify for at least two hours, then put the cover all.
Softening Face & Beard Oil
We like to keep things simple, and this recipe is no different! With just a few ingredients, you can easily experiment with switching things out to see what works best for you. Try another carrier oil in place of jojoba oil such as fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil, experiment with other essential oils (remember: never wear a citrus oil in the sunlight; it can cause burns!) and play with the amount of CBD you use until you find a combination suited to your particular needs.
Skincare can be an investment — especially when the ingredients include CBD! This simple recipe is a great DIY alternative that not only works for softening and hydrating the face, but also facial hair.
When it comes to beauty, jojoba oil is a good source of:
Vitamin B: improves the ability of the skin to retain moisture, helping reduce dryness, redness, and fine lines and can nourish and strengthen hair
Vitamin E: a powerful antioxidant with anti-aging properties
CBD is reportedly useful for:
Anti-aging: CBD is a powerful antioxidant, which protects the skin from free radicals such as smoke, UV rays, and other pollutants that can cause wrinkles and dryness
Acne: CBD is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, meaning that it can help reduce inflammation and cleanse the skin to help prevent future acne
Stimulating Hair Growth: fatty acids found in CBD improve scalp tissue and circulation, allowing for hair follicles to expand
Frankincense is great for:
Toning: frankincense can reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks
Healing: Frankincense has anti-bacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties to help keep your skin clean (and reduce acne!)
Pinene: a terpene known for reducing inflammation in the brain and improving cognitive function
And rosemary is good for:
Antiseptic: prevents the growth of microorganisms to promote healthy skin and hair
Moisturizing: balances oil secretions of the skin and scalp to improve conditions like dandruff
Opportunities for Cannabinoid Infusion
If you’d like to enhance this recipe with cannabinoids, consider one of the suggestions below. Topicals come in a variety of strengths and can have concentrates of anywhere between 1mg/mL to 40mg/mL. How to make Rosemary Infused Jojoba Oil in the LEVO Oil Infusion Machine
If you don’t have a LEVO, you can infuse your jojoba oil the old fashioned way or add 2 drops of rosemary essential oil in place of the rosemary infused jojoba oil.
By infusing dried rosemary into jojoba oil , we are retaining more of the nutrients from the whole plant than when rosemary is distilled into an essential oil, providing superior nutritional, therapeutic, and medicinal benefits.
