Medterra cbd oil for dogs reviews

Medterra CBD for Pets Review: Helping Keep Our Furry Companions Happy and Healthy

CBD isn’t just for humans. Many pet owners are finding that cannabidiol oil-infused products benefit their pets as well. In 2019, the global CBD pet market was valued at $27.7 million and is expected to grow substantially year-over-year (1). And pet CBD is said to help with everything from animal anxiety to joint support and assistance with sleep disorders and other health ailments.

Research is showing that our pets are more stressed out than ever. Some medical professionals are even saying that pets are feeling secondhand anxiety from their owners who are coping with things like the uncertainty of the pandemic (2). And per the Clinical Ethology of the Veterinary Faculty Report, an estimated 88 percent of treated pets showed signs of anxiety-related disorders in 2018 (3).

This is where pet CBD may help. Companies like Medterra are making pet treats and tinctures that contain CBD oil that are designed to help your pets feel calmer and to get around easier.

CBD Benefits for Dogs and Cats

Pet CBD has been touted as being able to do everything from calm a stressed out feline to treat neuropathic pain and seizures in dogs. It’s been said to be anti-inflammatory, to contain a variety of cardiac effects and to be an appetite stimulant in pets that may be losing interest in their food. And some people claim it can even help with cancer. Scientific data on the effectiveness of pet CBD is still lacking but there is anecdotal evidence from pet owners that suggest that some pet CBD products have made improvements in things like their pet’s demeanor and joint health.

While the research on pet CBD is evolving, some studies have found that it can be useful for a variety of conditions. One study published in the journal PAIN, found that CBD may be helpful in easing the symptoms of dogs that suffer with osteoarthritis (4). And there are other studies in the works. The AKC Canine Health Foundation recently sponsored a study though the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to see if CBD is beneficial in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs (5). But at the moment, there are currently no FDA-approved CBD products on the market for pets (6).

What is Medterra?

Medterra makes CBD products for both humans and pets. The company’s CBD is U.S. grown and extracted. It prides itself on crafting clean products that are fully compliant under the Kentucky Dept. of Agricultural Industrial Hemp Pilot Program and certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority. The Medterra pets line features chews, drops, and bundles. It also tests its products to make sure that the THC is filtered out. Per the company’s website:

“Our hemp goes through a C02 extraction process that separates the oil from the rest of the plant. This assures that your Medterra products are made with HEMP Extract.”

Medterra pet CBD is infused with MCT oil (coconut derived) and is legally able to be shipped to all 50 states. The CBD drops come unflavored or in beef or chicken flavor and range in price from $19.99 (150mg) to $39.99 (750mg). The peanut butter-flavored Joint Support Chews are $34.99 for 300mg and the Calming Chews, which are currently sold out on Medterra’s website (hello pandemic stress!) are $29.99 for 300mg. The company also sells a $99 bundle, which includes a 300mg pet tincture, a 1,000mg hemp tincture, and the peanut butter Joint Support soft chews.

Medterra offers a 30-day money back guarantee in the event that you are unsatisfied with one of its products.

Putting Medterra to the Test

Medterra Test #1

My 71-pound Doberman, Lyla, has a ton of energy. She’s a week away from turning 8, but people constantly stop us to ask us if she’s a puppy. She’s generally pretty calm when inside our house but whenever she gets outdoors, especially near other dogs and people, her energy kicks up. She was also raised with a Rat Terrier who taught her to constantly be on backyard squirrel, possum, and bird patrol. So during a walk, she is always on extra alert.

I decided to test out Medterra before walking Lyla to see if she would be any calmer. I gave her three calming chews to start things off. One chew contains 10 grams of CBD. According to the packaging, she falls into the 51- to 100-pound-dog range and should have five chews for a maintenance dose. But since she’s never had CBD, I wanted to ease her in. (NOTE: The website has a Pet Dosage Calculator that suggests 1.5 chews for pets 51-75 pounds and 2 chews for dogs over 75 pounds, so we’re unclear on why there is a discrepancy.)

Lyla was in the backyard when I gave her chews and I did notice that about 15 minutes later, she was lying down. When I brought her inside, she went to her bed, even after she saw me picking up her leash and putting on sunscreen, which is typically her cue that we’re heading out for a walk and when she starts whining and pacing around the house. So there was definitely a calming effect.

Lyla did seem a bit more relaxed at the start of the walk. Instead of immediately pulling on the leash, she stopped and smelled some plants and even paused to look up at a butterfly. We made it to the end of the block and then a squirrel crossed our path and whatever blissfully calm state the chews may have put her into went out the window. Follow up doses of the chews had similar calming effects but still showed that Medterra is definitely not squirrel proof for Lyla.

Medterra Test #2

Lyla doesn’t like to be separated from us. She also loves to swim in our pool. And she gets especially anxious when my husband, Greg, is swimming and she’s stuck inside. So we decided to put the CBD to the test under those conditions. This time, I tried the Medterra drops. For Lyla’s weight, she had one-and-a-half dropperfuls and I gave her the beef flavor. It was a little hard to hold her mouth open and squeeze the dropper into her mouth but once she realized it tasted like beef, she smacked her lips and seemed satisfied.

I started out with Lyla in the house while Greg swam in the pool. She usually paces back and forth and constantly hits the door whining whenever he is in the pool and she is inside. She did this to some degree but was noticeably calmer in her efforts. Instead of pacing, she just sat in front of the door and watched through the window, letting out minimal whines.

When she’s outside and we’re in the pool, Lyla typically runs around the perimeter barking like crazy. I’m always worried that my neighbors are going to get annoyed. This time, Lyla ran a few laps around the pool but not as fast and only let out a few barks. She eventually gave up and went to lie down in her bed. While the CBD drops didn’t completely calm her down, they certainly helped!

Medterra Test #3

My Rat Terrier, Rocky, is almost 12 and lately I have been noticing that he’s going up and down the stairs a little slower. I gave him some of the Medterra joint chews. For his size, his dose was half of one chew. It was a bit difficult to split the chew in half and to give him exactly the right dosing, but I got it close. After he had a chew, he immediately wanted to go outside and flop down in the sun. Then he was in the kitchen hoping to find scraps of food on the floor. So his appetite definitely kicked up! He did that for a while and then went upstairs. He did seem to walk up the stairs with more ease. And once he made it up there, he went right to his bed and took a nap. So the chews appeared to have calming and joint-soothing properties to them.

Things We Like

The Calming CBD Chews were my favorite of the products that I tried. They are grain-free and salmon flavored and I liked that they are non-GMO and contain some natural omega-3 fatty acids. They also are infused with calming ingredients like L-Tryptophan, chamomile, and valerian root. Lyla loved these.

I liked the immediate calming effect that these Medterra treats had on my dogs. And the Joint Support Chews did seem to help Rocky move a bit better after eating them. I also appreciated that the CBD drops are flavored, as I couldn’t imagine trying to squirt something without an appealing flavor into my Doberman’s mouth. And the chews were very easy to administer, as my dogs love every treat they ever encounter.

Things to Consider

Giving your pet CBD for the first time can be overwhelming. The Calming CBD Chews packaging said that a dog that weighs 51 to 100 pounds should take 5 chews as a maintenance dose and 10 chews for advanced dosing. There were no instructions on the label as to how to start your dog off on these for the first time. Each chew contains 10mg of cannabidiol oil and I thought giving Lyla, who was in the 51- to 100-pound range, 50mg to start was a lot. That’s why I started with three. In addition, the recommended serving when using the pet dosage calculator on the Medterra website was less than the one on the back of the package, so that is another reason why I erred on the side of caution.

Both the Calming Chews and the Joint Support CBD chews needed to be broken in half for my Rat Terrier, as Rocky’s weight recommended half a chew for his size. It was difficult to get a clean split with these chews, but I did the best that I could. I would have preferred being able to purchase a bag that came with one chew designated for his size.

The confusing thing was that the Medterra CBD drops said that each dropperful contained 10mg of CBD and that for Lyla’s weight, she should have 1.5 dropperfuls. So I wasn’t sure as to why she would take 15mg in the drops but 50mg in the chews. That seemed like a big difference to me. I played around with the dosing since this was something I was just planning to try with my dogs as a one off. But if you were using this as a consistent product for your pets, I would recommend speaking to your veterinarian or calling the company for proper dosing instructions.

The other thing to keep in mind is if you are using CBD for your pet’s pain, you likely won’t see an improvement overnight. Pets can’t communicate to you if they are hurting or not, so it seems like these products would require more time to see how they work based on how your pet is moving and acting.

Medterra Reviews: What They’re Saying

Medterra’s website features an array of pet owner reviews. One customer proclaimed: “This CBD product has turned my dog’s life around. He was previously limping around and unable to enjoy walks or get comfortable. We started him on 2 servings a day about 2 years ago and have never looked back. He’s got a new lease on life!”

Another customer reported: “My dog loves her Medterra Hemp oil! I add it on top of her food (raw or dry) she licks it all up every time! I believe it’s allowed her to age gracefully and feel healthy!” This made me realize I could have probably added the CBD drops to Lyla’s food instead of squeezing them directly into her mouth!

And one reviewer even noted that their goat “loves it!”

Medterra CBD for Pets: Our Verdict

If you are looking for a mild calming effect, then Medterra pet CBD may be a good fit for you and your pet. My pets certainly seemed calmer after taking them. It wasn’t, however, a magic cure all, as Lyla did still have some degree of anxiety around the pool and still got worked up over a squirrel in the neighborhood. At the end of the day, you can’t stop dog DNA and Lyla was made to guard humans and trained by her Rat Terrier brother to constantly be on the prowl for smaller animals.

The joint support treats seemed to initially help Rocky get around more, although it could have been my imagination. But I’ve heard amazing things from friends that have had older pets and given them CBD, so I believe it did have some sort of a positive effect.

Overall, we had a good experience. Although I don’t think my dogs will need CBD on a regular basis, it will be nice to have these products on hand. I will probably whip them out in high-stress scenarios like the Fourth of July, when the fireworks drive my big bad Doberman absolutely nuts!

Medterra CBD Pet Oil

Pet owners wanting to administer CBD to their pets should be excited about the Medterra CBD Pet Tincture. Offered in three flavors and three potencies, there’s a bottle suited to just about any domestic animal.

Medterra uses a quality CBD extract made with hemp plants grown on its proprietary farm in Kentucky. For such a high-quality CBD pet product, the price is extremely affordable.

Price/Value 4/5

The lowest potency CBD Pet Tincture comes in quite expensive, at $0.13 per mg of CBD, but the highest concentration is only $0.05 per mg of CBD. It’s clearly a better value for customers to purchase the 750 mg concentration, although it will depend on the pet.

CBD Potency 5/5

Medterra offers four potencies on its CBD Pet Tincture: 150 mg, 300 mg, 750 mg, and 1200 mg. This gives buyers a chance to choose the potency option most appropriate for the weight and size of their pet. We consider these low, medium, and high potencies, respectively.

Hemp Source 5/5

Medterra grows non-GMO hemp in Kentucky without pesticides. Although it is not certified organic, the CoA scores suggest very ethical and sustainable farming practices. No heavy metals, pesticides, or microbes were detected on the CoA for the CBD Pet Tincture.

Purpose/Uses 4/5

This product is intended for use on pets. However, Medterra doesn’t specify which conditions, if any, this product should be used for. This is likely because until now, there’s not much scientific evidence that supports the use of CBD on domestic animals. However, the concentrations are conducive to the animal administration of CBD.

Product Variations 5/5

Not only does Medterra stock the CBD Pet Oil in four concentrations, but it’s also available in unflavored, chicken, and beef flavored varieties. This makes it easy to administer to pets with a fussy palate or can simply be mixed into food.

Formulation/Ingredients 5/5

The CBD Pet Oil is the most straightforward of all the Pet CBD products in Medterra’s range. It’s not made for any specific ailment but is a no-fuss CBD supplement. The bottle contains only CBD and MCT oil (and natural flavorings).

Medterra CBD Pet Oil Product Review

Overview: CBD Pet Oil

As the popularity of CBD grew in the last five years, it also received a lot of attention for its potential application on domestic animals. And though anecdotal evidence is abundant, the science, unfortunately, hasn’t caught up yet. Countless CBD companies are capitalizing on the emerging need for natural, affordable therapies for pets. But not everybody takes it quite to the level that Medterra does.

Medterra’s CBD Pet Oil consists of pharmaceutical-grade hemp extract, clocking in at over 99% CBD purity. Medterra creates these extracts from hemp grown on its proprietary hemp farms in Kentucky, USA. The same fundamental ingredients are in both Medterra’s human CBD tinctures and its pet CBD tinctures. The only thing that differentiates the two products is the CBD concentration.

Four concentrations are available for the CBD Pet Oil: 150 mg, 300 mg, 750 mg, and 1200 mg. The dropper in the bottle has markings for 0.25 mL, 0.5 mL, and 0.75 mL.

This detail allows pet owners some flexibility in dosing while maintaining accuracy. The price ranges between $19.99 and $54.99, depending on the concentration. It’s available in either beef, chicken, or unflavored.

Customers get value and quality with Medterra’s CBD Pet Oil. Plus, the transparency of Medterra’s manufacturing process makes the company quite endearing. Overall, the CBD Pet Oil is a simple, yet quality CBD product that doesn’t dent the wallet.

Pros & Cons

  • Appropriate concentration for domestic animals (four concentrations)
  • Three flavors: beef, chicken, unflavored
  • CoA available
  • Ships globally
  • Backed by the US Hemp Authority
  • Really… there are none

Key Features & Benefits

1. Measured Dropper For Easy Dosing

CBD dosing for domestic pets is very different from human dosages. For humans, it’s typically the severity of the problem that defines the dose. For animals, it’s about bodyweight, which makes accurate dosing very important.

Medterra includes a measured dropper, marked with volumes 0.25 mL, 0.5 mL, and 0.75 mL. The markings make it easy for pet owners to administer precise dosing every time.

2. Three Potencies Available

Medterra offers the CBD Pet Tincture in four concentrations: 150 mg, 300 mg, 750 mg, and 1200 mg. Pets come in all sizes and weights. Offering multiple strengths in this product allows customers to select a potency appropriate for their pet.

3. Made With CBD Isolate (Over 99% Pure)

For Medterra’s Pet CBD products, the company uses CBD isolate. According to the Certificate of Analysis (CoA), this CBD isolate is over 99% pure. Medterra uses pharmaceutical-grade CBD in all of its products, including the Pet CBD Oil.

Choosing to use CBD isolate also makes the product more available internationally. There are still many countries that strictly regulate THC. These CBD isolate products contain no traces of THC.

About The Company: Medterra

Medterra is an American-owned and completely American-operated CBD manufacturer. Its hemp farms are in the state of Kentucky, although the company office is in California.

Medterra grows hemp under the Industrial Hemp Research Pilot Program of Kentucky, which subjects the crops to strict quality regulations. For example, for hemp cultivation to be legal under this program, it should not exceed a THC concentration of 0.2%. This also means that Medterra cultivates hemp under regulations set out by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

The US Hemp Authority also certifies Medterra. This organization requires certified companies to pass third-party audits and to comply with high standards and manufacturing processes.

Although Medterra isn’t certified organic, the company states that its hemp is organically grown and non-GMO. The CoA results adequately demonstrate this, as pesticides weren’t detected in any samples.

Having a look at Medterra’s ambassadors says a lot about the company. Firstly, almost everybody representative for Medterra is a professional athlete or was a professional athlete.

Athletes are the most critical people when it comes to therapeutics and health supplements, so seeing names like Charlie Hoffman and Lucas Glover (golf champions) on the list of Medterra ambassadors is impressive.

But arguably, what’s even more outstanding about Medterra, is that even with all of these credentials behind it, it’s still one of the best value CBD products on the market. It remains one of the most affordable and reputable companies in the USA from which to buy CBD products. You can even buy Medterra at CVS pharmacies throughout America.

Is hemp oil good for dogs? Will it enhance your dog’s health? Questions like these are swept away the moment you click on Prospect Farms’ website. The company was founded in 2018 on the rehabilitated 400-year old property in the coastal town of Prospect, Maine. It has complete control over the whole process of producing CBD: from seed selection and preparation to cultivation and practice of tinctures.

Moreover, Prospect Farms produces some of the highest-quality hemp plants since they are organically grown. The company is also fully transparent when it comes to additional carrier oils mixed with CBD, namely the source of olive oil or the quantity of THC in the formulas. Samples are always sent to third-party labs for checking, and packaging is fully recyclable.

Hemp oil for dogs benefits your pets in many ways, but Prospect Farm’s trademark is oil for mobility issues, which is highly praised among customers. Prospect Farms offer tailored recommendations for your dog based on its size, whereas the price is tweaked with respect to the concentration of CBD. Thus, you get to choose between two tinctures, one for mobility, the other for calming. They come in four different flavors (chicken, salmon, bacon, safflower), and four concentrations (120 mg, 240 mg, 360 mg, and 480 mg). The smallest dosage with the lowest CBD amount is $25, but the price rises by 10% for the larger dosages. The most expensive pet product is $60. You are also entitled to a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Hemp oil for dogs reviews on the company’s website are positive, but people complain about confusing dosage instructions. Luckily enough, you can always contact their super helpful customer service via phone or email.

CBD Oil vs Hemp Oil for Dogs

While the source of hemp oil is cannabis seeds, CBD oil comes from the leaves, stems, and flowers. CBD oil can be obtained even from a THC-rich cannabis plant, while hemp oil can only come from industrial hemp, created specifically to contain less THC. Consequently, THC content in CBD oils can go up to 0.3%, while hemp oils contain no THC.

  • Both hemp and cannabis-derived CBD oil contains cannabinoids and uses the entourage effect, in which multiple cannabinoids enhance one another’s effects. That’s why CBD oil is helpful with things like joint stiffness or pain in general.
  • The best hemp oil for dogs contains no cannabinoids but is nutrient-rich . Because of that, it still has beneficial effects, including anxiety relief.
  • While CBD oil seems to have more benefits, it ultimately boils down to your dog’s needs and your own preferences.

CBD and Hemp for Pets – Buyers’ Guide

If you go online and type “CBD oil for pets” on Amazon, you’ll get plenty of results. Opting for just one can be hard – even our article lists 15 companies! To narrow down the search more easily, you need to take things like CBD oil type, strength, dosage, and safety of extraction into consideration. Here is everything you should look at when choosing the right CBD oil for dogs:

✓ Type of CBD oil

It all boils down to how effective you want the product to be, and how much THC/cannabinoids you’re comfortable with. While full-spectrum CBD oils generally have the best results, they also contain THC. CBD isolate has no THC, but no cannabinoids for entourage effect, either. Broad-spectrum CBD is the golden middle, having some entourage effect, but not containing THC.

✓ Reasons for use

If you’re looking for a CBD oil for your dog’s glaucoma, while your friend’s dog suffers from separation anxiety, it’s likely you won’t choose the same product.

✓ Strength and dosage

If your dog has some minor problems, or you simply want to keep their physical and brain health from declining, you’d go for the products that require you to give lesser dosages. But if their problems are more serious – they’re in a lot of pain, their anxiety is off the charts – buying the ones that recommend bigger dosages makes sense. Likewise, if you have a smaller dog, you won’t be buying 5,000 mg products, and vice versa.

✓ Company background

Making the right choice also requires you to check whether the company has some disciplinary action going on, or if they’ve been warned/sued by the FDA. It may mean the company has been making false claims or mislabeling its products.

✓ CBD concentration, purity level, & quality

Best quality CBD oil for dogs will come with a certificate of analysis (COA) and will have been tested by third-party labs. You should also look for the percentage of CBD contained in each company’s oils.

✓ Extraction methods

The safest extraction method, yielding the most benefits is based on CO2. However, different companies use different CO2 extraction methods (supercritical, subcritical, or proprietary methods), resulting in a different end product. The minority of companies use alcohol extraction, which is not as effective. Some companies nowadays experiment with nanotechnology manufacturing to create nano-CBD, although this approach is still in its early stages.

✓ Do they work with veterinarians? Are they backed by any scientific study?

Companies that are backed by veterinarians or have scientifically proven benefits have a big advantage. It’s one thing for the company to claim that its hemp oil is great for dogs’ anxiety, and another one to have a study prove it.

✓ Pricing

Although pricing shouldn’t be the deciding factor when purchasing CBD oils for your pet, you’ll still need to find something you can afford.

What Is CBD Oil for Dogs and How Does It Help

Dogs, much like humans, have an endocannabinoid system that plays a role in memory, stress response, immune system, pain, etc. CBD oils create an influx of cannabinoids to improve dogs’ overall mental and physical health.

As they grow old, dogs start experiencing immune system and mobility issues. Even younger dogs can get sick or anxious. CBD oils improve dogs’ health, and can also target some specific issues. CBD oil for dogs can even help with cancer.

Here are the main areas in which CBD oils can help your dog:

✓ Chronic pain

Whether their joints hurt or they have an issue with internal organs, chronic pain is no joke. Instead of using strong painkillers, you can give your dog CBD oils and watch them become much healthier, happier, and more mobile.

✓ Cancer

Plenty of people have spoken about their dogs’ symptoms of cancer decreasing due to CBD oils. By finding the best CBD oil for your dog with cancer, you can prolong its life and make it much more comfortable. Even hemp oil for dogs can help with cancer.

✓ Anxiety

Whether your dogs are anxious all the time or just during certain events (4th of July fireworks, separation, or meeting new people), both CBD and hemp oil can do wonders for your dogs’ anxiety.

✓ Seizures

Watching your beloved pet suffer from seizures is heartbreaking. Although CBD is no miracle cure, the top CBD oil for dogs with seizures can help your pet experience them far less than before.

✓ Joint pain

Whether your pet has specific joint issues – knees, hips – or they’re just old and can’t move quite like they used to, CBD oils can help them get the pep back in their step.

How We Created This List? Our Methodology

To find the best CBD for dogs in 2021, we took a couple of things into consideration.

For one, we looked into the companies’ manufacturing processes and how the products are tested.

We also obtained a list of ingredients in every product, compared pricing, and made sure to include only the most reputable companies out there.

Here’s what we based our list on:

✓ Company’s manufacturing and testing processes. Dog CBD oil reviews wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the company’s production practices. If a company uses high-quality extraction methods and is socially conscious, chances are it’s on our list.

✓ Third-party lab reports. By testing their products in independent laboratories, companies prove that they adhere to the highest standards.

✓ Ingredients and CBD quality. Most companies use at least several additional ingredients. We made sure to include those companies that either don’t use any additives or use ingredients that aren’t harmful.

✓ Cost and value. The best CBD products for dogs and other pets can get pricey, but our list only consists of those that offer great value for their price.

✓ Customer experience and testimonials. Our list features ratings and the most common positive/negative things customers noticed about each brand.

Key Takeouts

As of 2018, the U.S. drug classification system doesn’t place CBD with 0.1% or less THC content into the most restrictive class of controlled substances. This new legal classification effectively admits that CBD has medical value. Plenty of veterinarians, studies, and CBD oil for dogs reviews agree that with careful dosage, dogs start experiencing the benefits of these oils fairly quickly. From anxiety to cancer and regular old-age problems, high-quality CBD oils can help your pet live a more comfortable and happier life. The best thing is, you have plenty of companies to choose from. Whether you feel comfortable with full-spectrum CBD or would prefer reaping the benefits of THC-free hemp oil for dogs, you can find just what you’re looking for and give your dog the life it deserves.

If you’re using the correct CBD/hemp oil dosage for dogs, it’s definitely safe for your pet. No CBD oil contains more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so it’s not enough to get your pet “high”.

The main differences lie in strength and dosage. If you give your pet your own CBD oil, it may be too strong for them and there may be some potential side effects, as CBD dosage for dogs is different.

Some vets do, and some even work for CBD companies to make sure the CBD oils they produce have the highest quality and are safe for pets.

If you use appropriate doses, absolutely! In fact, it’s recommended that they get it every day, much like you should take your vitamins every day.

In essence, yes – if you give them too large a dose. However, the effects aren’t extremely serious or life-threatening and include ataxia, lethargy, vomiting, and urinary incontinence.

Yes, CBD can treat all kinds of pains in dogs. It can alleviate anything from chronic pain in knees or hips to pain in internal organs.

Just like everything else, you can buy it online or you can explore your local pet stores and see if they offer it.

There are different types of CBD oil, so first things first, research what your dog needs at the moment. It all depends on both their needs and your budget.

Other commonly used pet products that incorporate CBD are tinctures, chews, and balms.

If you’re following the proper dosage, there shouldn’t be any side effects. However, even the best CBD oil for dogs may cause extensive thirst, drowsiness, or even ataxia and vomiting if you give your dog too much of it.
