What’s the Deal With CBD Lube, Anyway?
Here’s everything to know about it—including the best products to try.
With all the recent excitement around cannabidiol (CBD) and its seemingly endless purported benefits, it’s only natural that CBD lube is now a thing. It feels like wherever you look, a new sex company is popping up and selling a different cannabis-infused product promising to take your sexual pleasure to new heights. But does CBD lube actually do anything that regular lube can’t?
First, a refresher on what CBD is. There are two major chemical components in the cannabis plant: THC and CBD. THC—short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol—is the stuff that gets you high. CBD doesn’t. It can, however, potentially impart feelings of relaxation and calm: While scientists are still in the early stages of CBD research, early animal and human studies have pointed to CBD’s anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory properties, according to NPR. In a recent 2019 study of 72 participants with anxiety and insomnia, four out of five participants reported lower levels of anxiety, and two-thirds reported better sleep after taking 25 milligrams of CBD every day for a month. Additionally, the Mayo Clinic reports that CBD can be an effective anti-seizure medication.
CBD became legal federally when the Farm Bill passed in December 2018, making cannabis products that have less than 0.3% THC legal. That means that across all 50 states, CBD can be infused in pretty much every beauty and wellness product from facial creams to personal lubricants. (Nevertheless, as the New York Times points out, many states haven’t changed their laws to match new federal rules, leaving local police and prosecutors confused over what is legal and what is not.)
Now, back to CBD lube!

What are the benefits of CBD lube?
There’s still not a ton of CBD research out there, which means that most available info on CBD lube and sexual pleasure is anecdotal. That being said, many folks swear by the positive effects of using it during sex.
“CBD [reportedly] reduces inflammation, so for women who may experience pain or discomfort during intercourse, a CBD lubricant is your best friend,” explains Angela Mustone, founder and president of the CBD-infused lube brand High On Love. “Not only does it help reduce pain, but it also may help to relax the muscles and may increase blood flow.”
As for men, putting CBD lube on your junk “doesn’t do much . except lubricate,” Mustone says. However, you might see some added benefits if you use it on your butt; like the vagina, the anus is lined with mucous membranes, which allows for better absorption of CBD.
“Thankfully, everyone has a butthole,” says Sophie Saint Thomas, author of the upcoming book The Little Book of CBD for Self-Care.
What should I look for when purchasing CBD lube?
Given that CBD lube companies are popping up everywhere, how do you know you’re buying high-quality CBD lube?
“If you can, find an organic, full-spectrum CBD lube,” St. Thomas says. “There is an expression in cannabis, ‘the more the merrier.’ It means that individual cannabinoids, like CBD, work better when you leave in all the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and other nice plant products.”
According to St. Thomas, the second-best option is broad-spectrum CBD lube, “which keeps in most of the other plant compounds.” Next on the list after broad-spectrum is CBD isolate, which would only include CBD extract.
How about lubricants with CBD and THC?
Yep, some lubes have both. (You can legally buy ’em if you live in one of these 11 U.S. states.) According to some users, THC-infused lubes have the capacity to heighten sexual arousal even more than CBD lubes. While there’s evidence that cannabis can influence female sexual function, more research needs to be conducted to know for certain.
“With THC-infused products, [people report their] orgasms can last longer and be more intense and powerful,” Mustone says.
You might be wondering: Does lube with THC in it. get you high? The FAQ section of Foria Pleasure, a sexual wellness brand, answers this question: “The majority of women who try Foria Pleasure topically report they do not get ‘high’ and their experiences are of a more heightened sensation around sensual acts.” St. Thomas says it might happen if you’re using it in your anus, as “the lining of the rectum is thin.”
Of course, you will get high if you drink THC lube, as proven when writer Mira Gonzalez drank an entire bottle of Foria and briefly lost her mind. Of course, this is something we absolutely do not recommend doing.
What I didn’t know about CBD + sex (but I’m so glad I do now)
Just like caffeine can be the elixir that helps you start your day, CBD can be the one that helps you finish it.

You probably don’t need Valentine’s Day as a reason for romance, but sometimes the anticipation can be more akin to dread than thrall. Maybe life is clipping along and you are fine, but oftentimes that just is not the case, and the fallout can be stress that affects not only your daily life, but your nightly one, too.
So sometimes coordinating your head, heart and body just might need a little help. And just like caffeine can be the elixir that helps you start your day, CBD can be the one that helps you finish it.
What is CBD?
The marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa, has been used as a medicinal plant for thousands of years. The two most prevalent and commonly known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These active compounds are known to exert powerful anti-inflammatory, immune response, psychoactive and pain relieving effects through the activation of cannabinoid receptors found throughout your body.
How does CBD work?
Your body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that produces its own cannabinoid substances that bind to tiny receptors found in your central nervous system and other peripheral tissues, including your sexual reproductive organs, switching them on or off to regulate a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation and immune response. Both CBD and THC are chemically similar to your body’s endocannabinoids. This allows them to interact with your cannabinoid receptors to effectively enhance these systemic functions.
Will CBD make me high?
No. CBD and THC can both bind to the receptors in your brain, but they operate in opposite ways. In general, THC activates these receptors, causing the euphoria associated with marijuana, and CBD blocks any intoxicating impact caused by the receptors, so you don’t get high. And even though CBD doesn’t produce psychoactive effects, research has indicated it may boost your mood by enhancing your own endorphin-like neurotransmitter, anandamide, and the love hormone, oxytocin.
Why use CBD in the bedroom?
How is CBD good for sex?
There are many cannabinoid receptors in your reproductive organs and sexual tissues. When ingested, CBD can enhance your nightlife by reducing anxiety that can be distracting and inflammation that can cause discomfort, allowing you to focus on pleasure. When applied topically, CBD also can help relax blood vessels to increase blood flow to your sexy bits to enhance arousal, sensitivity and lubrication. While not fully understood, if you struggle with dryness and painful sex, using a lubricant that contains CBD can improve sexual performance and relieve pain.
So whether it is stress, anxiety, dryness or discomfort that stands in the way of a randy romp in the hay, CBD is uniquely capable of addressing each and every concern that amounts to your sexual wellness. And by relaxing muscles, easing tension and managing pain, it could be a game-changer for you postpartum.

That said, the CBD lends an added layer of relaxation and sensation that can’t be overlooked.
Editor’s note: If you’re considering having a baby, talk with your doctor about the risks of using CBD products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises against the use of cannabidiol (CBD) in any form during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.
Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel.
12 CBD Lube Options to Try That Will, Um, ‘Make Your Vagina Feel High’
I n 2021, there is seemingly little that CBD can’t solve. Feeling anxious? Sip a CBD latte. Need to wear an uncomfy pair of high heels? Slather the stuff on your feet in balm form. Want to ramp up your romps in the hay? Slap some CBD lube on your lady bits. Yup, you read that last part right. Just when we thought we’d found every possible use for CBD, we discovered that CBD lube is a thing. And—surprise surprise—it might just be the best use of the stuff yet.
Below are 12 CBD lubes you might want to try to enhance your time in bed, as well as everything you need to know about diving into the wild(ly fun) world of CBD lube. And no—it won’t get you high.
The Best CBD Lubes
As far as CBD lubes go, Foria’s Awaken was the OG. It’s made with broad-spectrum CBD, kava kava extract, and botanical and aromatic oils in order to, “enhance tactile sensation & pleasure while decreasing tension, discomfort and dryness” (um, sign me up). They’re meant to be used as a sort of “pre-lube” to really get things going on the outside (aka your clitoris), and shouldn’t be mixed with latex condoms because of the whole “made with oils” thing. A few highlights from reviewers, who have clearly loved this product: “I’m grinning ear to ear just talking about it,” “pretty divine,” and “tastes the best.”
This water-based lube doesn’t contain any oil, so it’s compatible with latex, and created for both men and women. It’s paraben free, petrochemical free, and non-staining. And it’s suitable for anyone who is looking for a gentle lube; one reviewer said, “I have extremely sensitive skin and this causes no irritation at all. I am very happy with it.”
This water-based lube (read: can be used with condoms) features CBD that acts as an anti-inflammatory that also encourages blood flow for “optimal sexual wellness.” It feels like a true lube, so will get things nice and slippery but with the added benefits that CBD brings to the table bed.
This lube is packed with all kinds of good stuff. In addition to the CBD, it’s also got aloe which the brand’s website says will “improve collagen and vaginal elasticity, reduce inflammation.” 8-10 pumps of the stuff should be enough to get you going, and in addition to adding a little flavor to your sex-life (whether with a partner or alone), it also works as a vaginal moisturizer.
Enhance your orgasms with this water-based lube, which has a combination of pure CBD and a plant-based aphrodisiac blend that includes organic aloe vera juice. You apply one pump on the clitoris and one on the inner labia; the lube uses nano-particles to maximize the CBD absorption to increase the intensity of your “O”s. One reviewer even said, “I was impressed, I noticed the difference in minutes after massaging the serum in, every sensation was amplified.”
While most lubes come in pump form, TOTO comes in a spray bottle so you can spray it on your hands or directly on your erogenous zones (it’s designed for the vulva/vagina, but can be used on all genitalia). All the ingredients are organic and it’s safe to ingest and can double as a body massage oil, but it is oil-based, so avoid using it with any latex condoms.
This little bottle has 250 mg of CBD and an equal opportunity oil for all bodies. It’s made with all natural, plant-based ingredients including peppermint and black pepper essential oils, and organic cacao seed butter, which contains Anandamide, a natural bliss neurotransmitter. It’s safe to use with sex toys but not latex. One reviewer noted, “We love the texture (soft and slick, not sticky) and smell (tobacco, vanilla, peppermint, hemp), as well as how it absorbs into your skin otherwise–no slimy, gross residue. Makes cleanup easy.”
Here’s one bottle of lube you won’t mind leaving out on your nightstand. This sleek looking spray bottle has some impressive contents too: a lube with full-spectrum CBD and botanical ingredients. It’s vegan and cruelty-free but not compatible with latex. And if you don’t like scents, look no further—this lubricant has no fragrances and additives.
It’s hard to argue with chemistry, in and out of the bedroom. This chemist-formulated lube can also be used as a massage oil and has 150 mg of CBD isolate made from hemp grown in Colorado. It also includes natural ingredients like coconut oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E to provide moisture, as well as a blend of essential oils (vanilla, orange, ylang ylang, and sage) to help create a relaxing and sensual experience.
Designed with women in mind, Privy Peach’s CBD oil not only helps you *~*chill out*~* and enjoy what’s going down when you’re getting down, but it also promises to help stimulate your body’s own lubrication while increasing circulation to your lady parts. It starts off as a semi-solid, which is dosed out into 10 perfectly sized, single-use servings, but melts into a satisfying oil when it comes in contact with the heat from your skin (… while, ya know, things are heating up).
Made with 500mg of full spectrum CBD and botanicals like lavender and safe, this arousal oil can help heighten and enhance intimacy (you apply it 15-20 minutes prior). It’s natural and fragrance-free so it can be used even on sensitive skin.
This water-based lubricant is safe to use on all types of condoms and is formulated with 200 mg of premium CBD. It’s fragrance-free and made in small batches, and will provide long-lasting lubrication for all your bedroom activities.
What are some of the benefits of CBD Lube?
“CBD lube can lead to increased sensitivity for some, and most experience relaxation which creates more willingness to receive pleasurable touch which in turn may lead to better and stronger orgasms,” says Tammy Nelson, PhD, a board certified sexologist and the author of Getting the Sex You Want. ” Using CBD lube can help with vaginal pain, with penetration, and can decrease and even prevent irritation.” She notes that some manufacturers claim that CBD lube can moisturize and regenerate skin, but says that hasn’t seen any studies that can confirm that.
Research has, however, shown that there are some other sexy potential benefits associated with getting herbal in your intimate activities. CBD, and cannabis’s other standout element, THC, work with the endocannibinoid system in your body, which controls homeostasis and “can effect everything from your mood to your appetite to your sex drive and your body’s response during sex,” Dosist VP of Brand Derek McCarty told Well+Good last year.
CBD lube can also be beneficial for people who might experience pain during sex, which can be caused by a number of different things including vaginismus, vaginitis, PCOS, or vaginal tearing from birth. “CBD can help reduce tension in the pelvic floor so it can decrease pain with penetration and inflammation,” says Cyo Nystrom, CEO and co-founder of Quim. She also points to studies that show CBD to be very beneficial for people experiencing PTSD from sexual trauma.
Are there any risks?
The biggie, as with pretty much all CBD products, is that there’s no regulation just yet so you’ve gotta be a wise label-reader so you know exactly what you’re getting. AKA if what you’re using is actually legit “CBD products vary greatly depending on the CBD source as well as the modality of consumption,” says Nystrom, adding that different people can also respond to different types of CBD in varying ways. “I encourage people to do their own research and try and few different products a few times before making a judgment call.”
Another important thing to keep in mind is that many CBD lubes are oil based, so they aren’t safe to use with condoms because oil can cause latex to tear (which, ya know, kind of defeats the purpose of a condom). And apparently, there is a such thing as “too much of a good thing.” “If you use too much or the CBD lube is too potent, you run the risk of dulling sensation,” says Nystrom. Duly noted.
. But what do people who have actually tried it say?
“It was amazing,” Rachel S. (who, understandably, requested that her last name not be used here) told me over email about her foray into the wild world of cannabis lubricant. “I would describe the feeling as if just your vagina was high without your mind being high. Everything felt intensified compared to normal.” In the words of Cardi B., okurrrrr. One thing worth noting, though: The lube Rachel tried was a mix of CBD and THC, so don’t expect as many fireworks with a CBD-only iteration.
Given Rachel’s high praise, I decided to try the whole CBD lube thing for myself by way of Foria Awaken ($48). And, well, it really was amazing. It may have been part placebo effect, but it helped me chill the F out and relax while getting down to business in a totally new way. and I was damn near tempted to cancel my Friday night plans of going out and meeting boys to stay home with my CBD-lube and the Internet’s favorite vibrator. True story.
